WHAT IS NUEYS?

The National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students (NUEYS) is an independent organization that was established in the 1960’s. It is dedicated to uniting Eritrean youths and promoting Eritrean identity, tradition, culture and history. It has over 120,000 members in Eritrea and many more members in its rapidly growing chapters around the world.

WHAT IS NUEYS-NA?

The National Union of Eritrean Youth in North America (NUEYS-NA) is the umbrella organization of all the local branches in the US and Canada. It abides by the basic tenets of NUEYS in Eritrea. However, each local branch is governed by its own by-laws, which are more in synch with the realities of its locality.

WHAT IS NUEYS-DC

The main objective of the Greater Washington DC chapter of the NUEYS (NUEYS-DC) is to provide a forum for young Eritreans to share ideas, discuss issues, participate in community activities, and educate themselves both about nation-building in Eritrea and empowerment in America.

The purpose of the organization is to uplift and consolidate scattered youth initiatives into a coherent group movement.

Its members hope that by sharing their educational, professional and social experiences with each other they can create a network of young Eritreans who will make a contribution to their country while strengthening their community in North America.

IS NUEYS-NA AFFILIATED WITH ANY POLITICAL OR GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION?

No. NUEYS-NA/DC is an independent apolitical organization. It is free and open to all Eritreans without regard to age, religion, gender, political affiliation or personal beliefs.

HOW DO I FIND OUT ABOUT OTHER NUEYS CHAPTERS OR ESTABLISH ONE IN MY REGION?

If you do not live in the DC area and would like to find a chapter of NUEYS where you live please contact our North American representative. If there is no chapter in your region and you would like to set one up, our representative will be happy to assist you. Wherever you live in North America, we invite you to join NUEYS and look forward to working with you.

If you have any questions or suggestions please feel free to contact any of our Executive Council members.

HOW DO I JOIN NUEYS-DC?

If you are interested in becoming a member please fill in an application form. To join the DC chapter a membership fee of $30 dollars a year is required. As a member, you are invited to attend all our meetings, you will automatically be included on our listserve, and you will be invited to participate in all the events and projects we participate in.

WHAT TYPES OF PROJECTS & ACTIVITIES DOES NUEYS-DC ENGAGE IN?

The DC chapter of NUEYS organizes an annual educational workshops on the college application process and financial aid. We have organize mentor programs between our college graduate members and Eritrean high school students. We raise funds to help with various social causes in Eritrea and the greater Washington area. We organize events to inform young people in the Greater Washington about current happenings in Eritrea. One of our largest recent events was a candle light vigil in front of the White House protesting the deaths of Eritrean students in Ethiopian concentration camps.

In the long run we hope to establish clubs, sports, cultural and entertainment centers to promote a sense of community and civic responsibility. We also want to explore ways whereby youths can participate in short and long term projects inside Eritrea.

The DC chapter of NUEYS has organized:

  • college workshops to inform Eritreans about the college application process and financial aid
  • one to one workshops to help college bound Eritreans with their college application essays
  • fund raising events like a car wash to send money back home.
  • a candle light virgil in front of the White House protesting the deaths of Eritrean students in Ethiopian concentration camps.
